The Sanctuary
For nearly a century, millions of pilgrims have visited the Sanctuary of Fatima to demonstrate their faith and devotion and to commemorate appearances by the Virgin Mary to three shepherd children.

During her last appearance the Virgin revealed the three "Secrets of Fatima" to one of the children, 10-year-old Lucia Santos.

Today, the the 3 tombs of the clidren (Lúcia, Francisco and Jacinta), can be visited in the interior of the Basilica..

Of architectural as well as spiritual significance, the Neo-Baroque limestone Basilica has a 65-m (213-ft) tower and the esplanade is twice the size of St. Peter's Square in Rome.
